Are Exploit Kits Doomed? New F-Secure Threat Report Says Yes
Exploits, which have become one of the most common vehicles for malware in the past decade, need out-of-date software in order to accomplish their goal of getting through security holes. But that software, Sullivan says, will be harder and harder to find. For example, with HTML 5's capability to "do it all", the need for third party browser plugins has mostly been eliminated. And today's browsers themselves are auto-updated, without the need for the user to intervene, so users always have the latest version.

Don't Let These Top 10 Android Threats Infect Your Mobile World
Making up 15% of detections, the older SmsSend family was the number one Android threat detected by F-Secure Labs in 2015. But it's not the only SMS sending family on the list – further down are also Fakeinst, SmsPay, and SmsKey. Attackers profit by setting up their own premium rate number. An infected device sends text messages to the number, racking up charges on the user's phone bill and fattening the attacker's wallet. These trojans infect either via apps posing as games in third party app stores, or via porn-related apps.
F-Secure says ‘Hi Mom' with Security
"I think many of us have had that call from a family member or a friend asking for help in securing their devices," said Norkio. "So people can now use SAFE to share the service with family members, relatives, and close friends in a simple manner, and use security to help people connect to what's really important to them. The whole idea of a SAFE circle is built around the idea that people want to protect each other, and the whole concept is designed to help people communicate this feeling to one another."
F-Secure Set to Dominate Smart Home Security
F-Secure SENSE is a security product that protects people by securing the Internet-connected devices in their living space – including IoT devices that are unable to run traditional security apps. Its standout component is a piece of smart hardware that creates a private, secure network by connecting with the other devices in people's homes, providing SENSE users with a single security solution for all of their devices. It uses F-Secure's Security Cloud to secure Internet traffic going in and out of homes, and lets people manage the security of their network and devices with a simple mobile app.
Stop Stressing and Start Testing
For example, 94 percent of respondents agreed that companies can be targets for cyberattacks – regardless of company size or industry. And respondents ranked protecting against inbound cyberattacks as some of their highest security priorities, with four of the six highest ranked priorities chosen by respondents focused on the prevention of inbound cyberattacks. But only 31 percent of respondents said their company had endpoint intrusion detection/prevention measures, which are integral to fighting these attacks.
Consumers Bought Smart TVs at the Same Rate as Desktops Last Year
According to Mika Stahlberg, F-Secure Director of Strategic Threat Research, these concerns are quite understandable considering the kinds of devices consumers are adopting. "After entertainment, IoT adoption is focusing on quality of life products. Products like security cameras, smart locks, and smart cars all play significant roles in physical security. So online threats will take on a real-world element as more people start using these devices, and people are right to be concerned about this."
F-Secure Launches Free Ad Blocking App for iOS 9 Users
F-Secure Security Advisor Sean Sullivan said that tests like these demonstrate the need for people to have greater control over their exposure to online advertising. "There's plenty of ways advertising is regulated in other types of media, so the idea that people shouldn't have some way to tone down the ad content they see online is a little silly. Turning down the volume on a TV ad is perfectly ok, and volume levels are often regulated to prevent ads from being too intrusive. Bringing ad blocking to digital media is really just giving people a way to turn down the noise."
Internet Security 2016 Brings Network Protection, Enhanced Cloud Cleanup
Network Checker is a localized version of F-Secure's popular Router Checker tool that checks Internet configurations to see if the Internet settings have been tampered with. One recent investigation discovered that a malicious campaign attempting to change people's Internet configurations had received nearly one million unique hits in a single day.* Attackers attempt to use these tactics to change settings in people's routers to manipulate the Internet traffic of any device that connects to it - a strategy that lets them compromise large groups of people at once, and remain undetected by conventional security software.
